A tragic house fire early Wednesday in Cohutta, Georgia, claimed the lives of five family members, including three young children.
The victims, all members of the same household, were identified as 74-year-old Brenda Sandifer, 26-year-old Brittany Sandifer, 5-year-old Joshua Sandifer, 4-year-old Jacob Sandifer Jr., and 2-year-old Legend Sandifer.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 3:30 a.m. on Tree Top Lane, with nine fire trucks and three battalion chiefs arriving on scene. The fire appeared to have started in the central area of the home, including the living room and kitchen, according to Tony Pritchett, Georgia’s deputy commissioner of safety fire.
Although the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, initial findings suggest that an electrical malfunction may have triggered the deadly blaze. Investigators have ruled out foul play.
The community is grieving the loss of this family, and authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire.
