Demarius Willabus Payne, an 18-year-old visiting from Atlanta, Georgia, tragically drowned on Boxing Day while celebrating his birthday with family in Linden.
The incident occurred when Payne and his relatives were in a small boat on the Demerara River at Coomacka. The boat capsized, and Payne, while attempting to save others who had fallen overboard, panicked and suffered cramps.
Though he was rescued in a semi-conscious state and rushed to Linden Hospital, Payne was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that he died from drowning. His family is left devastated by the loss, especially given that the tragedy occurred on his birthday.
