Police have identified 79-year-old Marcus Damon Gaddis as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on Tuesday evening, just after 6 p.m., in the 800 block of Honeysuckle Road, Dothan.
According to Lt. Scott Owens, Gaddis stopped his vehicle for unknown reasons before getting out with papers in hand.
Some of the papers scattered onto the roadway, and while Gaddis was attempting to gather them, he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver involved in the crash fled before police arrived. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored Chevrolet SUV, possibly a Tahoe, leaving the scene. Authorities are actively searching for both the vehicle and the driver.
Lt. Owens urged local auto body shops to remain vigilant for any SUVs matching the description that may be brought in for repairs and to contact the Dothan Police Department if they have any information.
