Fatal Columbiana train crash death of Nickolas Thompson – Obituary
A tragic accident early Friday morning in Columbiana, Ohio, resulted in the death of 45-year-old Nickolas Thompson from Salem. Thompson’s vehicle collided with an Amtrak passenger train at the Pittsburgh Street crossing shortly before 6 a.m.
The Columbiana Police Department reported that the crossing gates were down at the time, but Thompson drove around them before being struck by the oncoming train.
The crash investigation is ongoing. Over 100 passengers aboard the train were not injured, as the train was traveling from Chicago to Miami, with a scheduled stop in Pittsburgh. The tracks, owned by Norfolk Southern, were temporarily repaired after the accident.
Thompson was known to the local community, including Sheena Steiner, who runs Creations by Sheena Marie in Salem. Steiner is now helping the family by donating proceeds from sales and collecting donations to ease their burdens during this difficult time.
