Fatal Denver shooting death of Ernesto Delgado – Obituary

The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner has identified Ernesto Delgado, 30, and Eric Delgado, 42, as the victims of a deadly shooting at a 7-Eleven gas station early Monday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of gunfire at the station near East 35th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard just after midnight. Ernesto suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while Eric was fatally struck by a single shot, according to the medical examiner’s statement.

Officers arrived at the scene to find a man armed with a handgun, later identified as 19-year-old Fabian Vasquez. According to police reports, Vasquez allegedly opened fire on the responding officers before fleeing the store. Officers returned fire, but Vasquez managed to escape.

Hours later, Vasquez was located hiding behind a building in the 3300 block of Jackson Street, only a short distance from the crime scene. A handgun was discovered nearby.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an argument. According to the victims’ brother, Ernesto and Eric had an altercation with 18-year-old Dominic Gallegos inside the store. The dispute escalated into the parking lot, where Gallegos and his brother allegedly brandished firearms. The brother was shot, though it remains unclear if he returned fire.

The witness further stated that Vasquez approached and shot his other brother multiple times at close range while he was lying on the ground.

Security footage captured the exchange, showing Gallegos and the victims engaged in an argument outside the store. Vasquez was seen exiting a nearby vehicle before opening fire. One victim collapsed in the parking lot, while the other sought refuge inside the store. The footage allegedly shows Vasquez walking up to the fallen victim and firing multiple rounds.

The crime scene contained at least 30-40 shell casings, with the victims’ car riddled with bullet holes and shattered windows. The front glass of the convenience store was also damaged.

Gallegos was later taken into custody on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Authorities continue to investigate his role in the shooting, but initial reports indicate he was involved in the argument that led to the violence.

In response to the tragedy, community members have organized fundraisers, raffles, and a benefit event at River Bar to support the Delgado family with funeral expenses.

The Denver police officer involved in the exchange of gunfire has been reassigned pending an investigation, as per standard protocol. The Denver District Attorney’s Office will determine formal charges against Vasquez and Gallegos.

Vasquez is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. Gallegos, who has pending cases in Lake and Weld counties, is also due in court next month.

A memorial mass for Ernesto and Eric Delgado will be held at 11 a.m. on February 14 at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Denver.
