Willie Robert Morgan dies in fatal Birmingham shooting
Fatal Birmingham shooting death of Willie Robert Morgan – Obituary
Willie Robert Morgan, a 55-year-old Birmingham resident, was shot and killed Saturday afternoon following a dispute over a minor traffic accident on an Interstate 59 off-ramp.
Police responded to reports of a shooting just before 2 p.m. at the I-59 southbound ramp near the 31st Street North exit. When officers arrived, they found Morgan unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene at 2:03 p.m.
Authorities say the shooting occurred after Morgan and another driver were involved in a fender bender. The two began arguing, and the suspect shot Morgan before driving away. Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station captured Morgan exiting his pickup truck and approaching the suspect’s vehicle. Moments later, the car sped off, leaving Morgan on the ground.
Police quickly identified the suspect and, under the direction of Interim Police Chief Michael Pickett, the Special Enforcement Team took him into custody in Pleasant Grove. The suspect was booked into the Birmingham City Jail, and investigators are working with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to determine possible charges.
Morgan’s death marks Birmingham’s 11th homicide of the year and the third within a 24-hour period. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
