Authorities have identified 17-year-old Nathaniel Moreno as the individual who was fatally shot during a police encounter in downtown San Antonio on Thursday.
According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office, Moreno died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was classified as a homicide. The incident unfolded when San Antonio Police officers spotted a blue Kia sedan, which had been reported stolen earlier that day.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Flores Street between Houston and Commerce streets, deploying spike strips before boxing it in at Commerce and Flores streets. Moreno, who was allegedly driving the car, did not comply with police commands, instead striking patrol vehicles and moving toward officers.
In response, officers fired at the vehicle. Witness videos circulated online show multiple rounds being discharged. Despite being hit, the vehicle continued down Commerce Street, where it crashed into a building and caught fire. Officials stated that the building sustained no significant damage.
A passenger in the vehicle was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Their current status remains unknown.
The investigation into the shooting and subsequent crash is ongoing.
