Rescue crews continue their efforts to recover the remains of the ten people who perished in the crash of a Bering Air flight in rural Alaska on Thursday, February 6, 2025. The two victims identified so far are Rhone Baumgartner and Kameron Hartvigson, who were part of a team from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
They had been in Unalakleet to service a heating system at a community water plant. Both were described as passionate and dedicated to their work, making a lasting impact on the rural communities they served.
The plane, which had departed Unalakleet, lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff and was found the following day, approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome. Crews have been working against harsh weather conditions, including snow and high winds, to recover the wreckage.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash, which is the third major air disaster in the region this year.
