Authorities have identified 33-year-old Giorgi Merabishvili as the man who was fatally shot by a Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputy early Sunday morning.
The incident took place at the Pilot Travel Center in Stanton, Tennessee, around 12:50 a.m. on February 9. According to investigators, Merabishvili had stabbed another individual at the location. When deputies arrived and attempted to engage with him, the situation escalated, leading at least one deputy to open fire.
Officials reported that Merabishvili also had stab wounds, which they believe were self-inflicted. The individual he allegedly stabbed was treated at the scene and later released. No deputies were injured during the encounter.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is currently handling the case.
