Urbana police have confirmed that 7-year-old Darnell “DJ” Wicks was tragically killed during a domestic incident on Saturday evening.
The fatal shooting took place at a residence on Lanore Drive at around 7:39 p.m. According to police reports, DJ was shot by 43-year-old Melvin Braxton, who was later found mortally wounded across the street from the scene of the crime.
The Champaign County Coroner confirmed that Braxton, who had been in possession of a stolen firearm, died soon after being taken to a hospital. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and have not yet determined who may have killed Braxton.
A community forum and press conference are scheduled for Friday morning to provide further updates. Services for DJ are set to be held on February 22 at The Vineyard Church in Urbana.
