Fatal Stockton shooting death of Jamal Calbert – Obituary

Seventeen-year-old Jamal Calbert succumbed to his injuries after being shot in Stockton early Wednesday morning, according to police.

Officers were called to the 600 block of Dovewood Street in the Valley Oak District around 1:45 a.m. in response to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Calbert in a garage with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to the hospital, where he later passed away.

Calbert’s grandmother, Nora Roots, described him as an easygoing young man. She also shared that his father had also lost his life to gun violence a decade ago. “I went through this ten years ago,” she said. “His dad, my son, was taken in the same way.”

Authorities have not yet made any arrests in connection with the shooting. Stockton Police spokesperson Omer Edhah stated that the investigation is ongoing, with officers still gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Calbert is the second 17-year-old to be fatally shot in Stockton this year. The first, Julian Martinez, was killed last month near Anderson Park’s skatepark. Two teens were arrested for Martinez’s death on February 18, and a 14-year-old already in juvenile hall on unrelated weapons charges was also linked to the case on Tuesday.

So far, Stockton has recorded five homicides in 2025, a slight decrease compared to seven at this time last year. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Calbert’s death.
