Authorities have identified the victim of a deadly road rage shooting that occurred Friday morning on Interstate 40 near Cary. Ricardo Baez Cardenas, 35, lost his life in the incident, which led to significant traffic disruptions as law enforcement investigated the scene.
Deputies arrested 32-year-old Josue Alejandro Quintanilla Reyes of Durham in connection with the shooting, charging him with Cardenas’ murder.
The incident unfolded around 6:30 a.m. when witnesses reported seeing an altercation between two drivers escalate. A driver who was behind Cardenas’ truck captured dashcam footage showing multiple gunshots being fired from one vehicle into another. The footage also recorded the sound of shots and shattered glass as Cardenas’ truck veered off the road.
Law enforcement responded to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire and found Cardenas’ white pickup truck on the roadside. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Authorities initially searched for a getaway vehicle, believed to be a Honda, before making an arrest.
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
