Authorities in St. Thomas are investigating the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Matthew Gumbs, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds on Sunday, March 9, 2025, in Estate Mariendahl.
At approximately 5:01 p.m., the V.I. Police Department’s 911 Emergency Call Center received a report from a concerned citizen stating that a man was lying on the ground, bleeding. Shortly after, the caller informed dispatchers that the individual appeared to have been shot and was unresponsive.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and discovered an unresponsive male with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Emergency Medical Technicians assessed his condition and, at 5:14 p.m., confirmed that he had no signs of life. The victim was later identified as Matthew Gumbs by his next of kin.
The VIPD’s Major Crimes Unit has launched an investigation into the shooting, but no suspects have been identified, and the motive remains unknown.
