Roanoke Police have identified the two victims of a tragic train crash that occurred on Sunday evening. Maria Domitila Nolasco Martinez, 69, and her grandson, Jose Rodrigo Yanes Barahona, 9, both from Roanoke, were fatally struck by a train after being on or near the tracks. Authorities stated that they could not move out of the way in time as the train approached.
Another child involved in the incident suffered minor injuries. The exact reasons for their presence on the tracks have not been disclosed. Norfolk Southern, the railroad company, expressed deep sympathy for the victims’ families and confirmed their cooperation with local authorities in the ongoing investigation.
