Fatal Williamsburg shooting death of Joharis Rivas – Obituary

Joharis Rivas, 21, was identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that took place outside an auto repair shop in Williamsburg on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The incident occurred around 2:18 p.m. in front of 10 Meserole Street. Authorities say Rivas was shot once in the head. Emergency responders transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he was later pronounced dead.

 

A witness reported that the suspect fled the scene on a scooter. Police are currently searching for a man dressed in all black, wearing a mask, and carrying a backpack.

 

Friends described Rivas as a caring and fun-loving person. He leaves behind three young daughters.

 

Council member Jennifer Gutiérrez, whose office is near the crime scene, expressed her shock over the shooting, emphasizing the community’s ongoing efforts to reduce gun violence. Local violence-prevention organizations have stepped in to offer support.

 

This marks the second shooting in the 90th Precinct this year. In 2024, there were no reported shootings in the area, according to NYPD data.
