A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy lost his life in a tragic crash while pursuing a suspect in Victorville on Monday.
Authorities identified the fallen deputy as Hector Cuevas, Jr. He leaves behind his wife, two children, parents, and two siblings.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. when deputies received a report of a possible stolen vehicle. A deputy from the Victorville City Station spotted the suspect’s car, initiating a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, Cuevas’ patrol vehicle collided with another car before crashing into a light pole near El Evado and Seneca roads.
The force of the impact split the patrol car in half, critically injuring Cuevas, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement agencies later escorted his body in a solemn procession to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, where fellow officers and community members paid tribute.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr. of San Bernardino, faces charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer, resulting in death or serious injury.
A woman in her 20s, driving a black Toyota Camry that was struck during the collision, sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Her condition remains under evaluation.
The intersection remained closed for investigation throughout the day, while authorities later tracked down the stolen vehicle and made arrests.
In response to the tragedy, the San Bernardino Police Officers Association expressed condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a San Bernardino County deputy. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
