Kila Searcy, 19, was identified as the victim of a three-car collision that took place early Sunday morning in Milwaukee. Authorities determined that the vehicle responsible for the crash had been reported stolen, and they are still searching for the individuals involved.
The accident, which occurred around 12:50 a.m. near 3700 W. Brown St., resulted in injuries to five other people, including a 4-month-old baby who was transported to the hospital.
According to police reports, the driver of the stolen car was traveling north on North 37th Street when they crashed into the vehicle Searcy was in, which was heading west on West Brown Street. After impact, Searcy’s car then collided with a third, parked vehicle that was occupied at the time.
Among the injured were an 18-year-old and a 24-year-old in Searcy’s vehicle. A 31-year-old, a 24-year-old, and the infant in the parked car were also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Searcy was reportedly on her way to work when the crash happened, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up by her family to assist with funeral expenses. Efforts to reach her relatives for comment have been unsuccessful.
Alderman Russell W. Stamper II addressed the incident in a public statement, emphasizing the need for the community to take a stronger stance against reckless driving.
He urged drivers to be more responsible and encouraged residents to hold one another accountable for dangerous behavior on the road.
Milwaukee has long struggled with reckless driving and car theft, leading to various efforts to combat the issue. The state Assembly recently passed a bill that would expand law enforcement’s ability to tow and impound vehicles used in reckless driving incidents, regardless of whether the driver owns the car.
The bill, which has received support from Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and the Milwaukee Common Council, still requires approval from the Senate and Governor Tony Evers.
Searcy’s death marks the eighth fatal car crash in Milwaukee this year. In 2024, 66 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, while 77 fatalities were recorded in 2023.
Car thefts in Milwaukee have slightly declined compared to last year, with a reported 1,065 thefts so far—down 6% from 2024 and 16% from 2023.
