Boyd Jarrell, 47, was discovered dead from a gunshot wound inside a house engulfed in flames on South Cornell Avenue in East Hyde Park, according to his family and Chicago police. The incident took place early Saturday morning, when authorities were called to the 4900 block of South Cornell Avenue due to a fire just before 6:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, police found the unresponsive man who had been shot in the head and was later pronounced dead at the scene. The fire was successfully extinguished, though authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire or the person responsible for the shooting.
Family members identified the victim as Boyd Jarrell. They shared their grief outside his home, saying that Jarrell, a retired businessman and father, had relocated to the neighborhood after a recent divorce.
Neighbors expressed concern over the violent crime in an area typically known for its tranquility. Christopher Hague, a neighbor, described hearing a loud noise followed by the smell of smoke. Upon realizing something was wrong, he rushed outside and saw smoke billowing from what he suspected to be his neighbor’s bedroom. He immediately called 911.
Both the family and neighbors noted that one of Jarrell’s vehicles, an orange Lamborghini, was missing from his garage after the incident.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed details regarding the fire’s origin or the circumstances leading to the shooting. Area One detectives continue to investigate the case, leaving both residents and Jarrell’s family seeking answers.
“It’s scary,” Hague remarked, expressing uncertainty about what else might unfold.
