Fatal St. Tammany Parish police pursuit death of Grant Candies – Obituary

Sergeant Grant Candies, 37, of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, was killed Sunday morning while assisting in a multi-parish police chase.

Authorities report that Candies was deploying a spike strip on Interstate 10 near the Oak Harbor exit when he was struck by the fleeing suspect’s vehicle. Despite immediate response, he did not survive his injuries.

The pursuit began when a deputy attempted a traffic stop on Brownswitch Road, but the driver sped off, leading law enforcement on a chase that ended in Orleans Parish after crashing into a New Orleans Police unit near I-10 and Crowder.

Candies joined the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office in March 2016 and was promoted to sergeant in 2023. Known for his dedication and bravery, he had previously saved two lives and was named the 2023 STPSO Deputy of the Year. He also served as a field training officer, mentoring new deputies.

He leaves behind a wife and two children. Sheriff Smith praised Candies as an invaluable asset to the department, a leader among his peers, and a devoted officer committed to protecting his community.
