Zahkir Whitfield, 15, was fatally shot on a SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon following an altercation among a group of juveniles, authorities reported.
According to police, the fight broke out near 40th Street and Girard Avenue. As the conflict escalated, one individual exited the rear of the bus and fired a single gunshot, striking Whitfield in the chest. He did not survive his injuries.
As investigators work to identify and locate the shooter, members of the community are expressing grief and concern over the ongoing violence among young people. Parents and school officials are taking steps to support students affected by the tragedy. The Upper Darby School District announced it will provide counseling resources to students and staff.
Authorities continue to review surveillance footage and other evidence in their search for the suspect. A $20,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
