Fatal Wasilla police shooting death of Brett George – Obituary

Authorities have identified Brett George, 34, as the man fatally shot by a Wasilla police officer last week. According to Alaska State Troopers, Officer Cody Rice, a five-year veteran of the department, shot George after he allegedly fired an assault rifle at Rice’s patrol vehicle.

The incident began after a 911 call reported that George was threatening family members with a firearm. When law enforcement arrived, George allegedly put on body armor, armed himself with an assault rifle, and fled the scene in a vehicle. The family members were able to escape safely.

During the confrontation, George reportedly opened fire at Rice’s car, leading the officer to return fire, killing him. No officers were injured during the exchange.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case, with an independent review to be conducted by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions upon completion.

This is not the first time Rice has been involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting. In 2021, he was one of three officers who shot and killed a Wasilla motorcyclist who allegedly reached for what officers believed was a firearm. The weapon was later determined to be a BB gun.

Authorities have yet to release the findings from the Office of Special Prosecutions regarding Rice’s previous case. The investigation into George’s death remains ongoing.
