A tragic incident occurred Tuesday night in Newport News, where 69-year-old Anthony Johnson of the city was fatally struck while attempting to cross Jefferson Avenue. The accident happened around 7:51 p.m. near the intersection with Ivy Farms Road.
Johnson was hit by a 2024 Toyota 4Runner SUV, and despite efforts to provide assistance, he was pronounced dead at the scene just six minutes later. Emergency crews set up a canopy to cover his body while traffic was diverted for several hours in the area.
The driver of the Toyota, a 50-year-old man, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. The incident is under investigation, and while authorities have not disclosed whether alcohol or speed were factors, no charges have been filed at this time.
