Authorities have identified the woman who lost her life in a traffic accident in Fairview Heights on Tuesday. Carolyn S. Atwood, 70, of Collinsville, was named as the victim by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.
Police responded to a crash at the intersection of North Illinois Street and Salem Place around 11 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found Atwood unresponsive and trapped inside a vehicle. Emergency responders worked to free her from the wreckage and immediately initiated life-saving efforts.
Atwood was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, where she was pronounced dead at 11:33 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Metro-East Crash Assistance Team is aiding the Fairview Heights Police Department in determining the circumstances that led to the accident. The department extended condolences to Atwood’s family as the investigation continues.
