Fatal Jefferson County Jail medical incident death of Shaquille James Staples – Obituary

Shaquille James Staples, a 31-year-old inmate at Jefferson County Jail, passed away on Monday night after experiencing a medical emergency while in custody. According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Staples suffered the medical episode around 9:30 p.m. at the downtown Birmingham jail.

 

Jail staff and other inmates witnessed the incident, and Staples was promptly transported to UAB Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. The cause of his death remains under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Staples had been incarcerated since May 15, 2024, and had recently pleaded guilty to drug-related charges, resisting arrest, and attempting to flee law enforcement. He had been sentenced to seven years, with one year to serve.
