Mayor Brenda Bethune said the officer acted swiftly and appropriately, suggesting that the officer’s quick actions may have prevented further loss of life. She emphasized that the situation could have turned out far worse.

 

The Myrtle Beach Police Department stated it would conduct an internal review of the officer’s actions, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is also investigating the incident, as is standard with any officer-involved shooting. Bethune assured the public that the full report would be made available once SLED’s investigation concludes.

 

Video footage from the scene showed people fleeing the area as police rushed in to contain the situation. Eleven people were injured during the disturbance.

 

Despite the tragic event, city officials stressed that Myrtle Beach remains a safe place for residents and tourists. Councilman Gregg Smith called the shooting an isolated event, not reflective of the typical experience in the city.

 

Some visitors expressed concern over the violence, but many, including longtime tourists, said the incident would not deter them from returning.

 

Mayor Bethune noted that overall crime rates in Myrtle Beach have dropped significantly in recent years, thanks to increased security measures like more cameras and advanced technology.

 

The SLED investigation is expected to take about three weeks. Authorities urged the public to be patient while they await the official findings.

Lester Parrish, a 17-year-old resident of University Pointe Apartments, was arrested Saturday morning at the Avenue at Southern on Georgia Avenue. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Parrish is currently being held without bond at the Bulloch County Jail.

 

Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch confirmed that Reese suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and that he was called to East Georgia Regional Medical Center regarding the incident.

 

Law enforcement agencies, including the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Southern University Police, and Georgia State Patrol, assisted in the response and investigation.

The shooting happened on October 22, 2022, while Smith was spending time with friends. According to Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich, 24-year-old Ronell Scott allegedly drove by and shot Smith in the head before fleeing the scene.

 

Investigators, after years of interviews, determined the attack was linked to an ongoing feud between two groups who had been making rap videos aimed at disrespecting one another. Smith had reportedly created one of these videos, and Scott allegedly retaliated by taking his life.

 

“These killings are absolutely senseless,” Pillich said in a press release. “No disagreement, especially over something in a rap video, should lead to someone’s death. Thanks to persistent investigative work, authorities identified Scott as the shooter. We are committed to seeking justice for victims.”

 

Almost three years after the incident, Scott was indicted on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, one count of felonious assault, and one count of aggravated murder. A warrant for his arrest has been issued.

 

The death of TreShawn Smith deeply affected his community, particularly his mother, Evvie Smith.

 

“No parent should ever have to bury their child,” she said. “It’s not the way life is supposed to go. I just want justice for my son, not revenge.”

Authorities say Noor was behind the wheel when he was shot, causing him to collide with a vehicle carrying a family. Despite the crash, he managed to drive another block before coming to a stop near 3rd Avenue South and 9th Street South.

 

Officers responding to the scene found Noor slumped over in his vehicle, suffering from at least one critical gunshot wound. They quickly administered emergency care and were able to revive his heartbeat.

 

He was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, but despite medical efforts, he passed away on Thursday.

 

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified him as Zakaria Abdikafi Noor and listed his cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.

 

As of Friday, authorities had not made any arrests related to the shooting.

A witness bravely entered the water, shattered the rear window, and rescued two children trapped inside the vehicle. The rescued children, believed to be around five and seven years old, were rushed to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover.
