Fatal North Chicago shooting death of Carl P. Marder-Grant – Obituary
Authorities have identified Carl P. Marder-Grant as the victim who was fatally shot near Victoria Avenue and 17th Street in North Chicago on the evening of Wednesday, April 23, 2025. After an extensive investigation, officials from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and North Chicago Police Department concluded that Carlos D. Marchan, a 25-year-old from the 1000 block of Jackson Street in North Chicago, was responsible for the shooting.
Detectives determined that Marchan fired into a crowd gathered outside a home in the 1600 block of Victoria Avenue. Marder-Grant was hit by gunfire and died as a result of his injuries. Following the review of evidence, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized a first-degree murder charge against Marchan. He is scheduled for an initial court hearing this morning, with prosecutors planning to seek his detention until trial.
Investigators believe that the shooting was related to gang activity. It is important to note that all individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The booking photo released is from a previous arrest at Lake County Jail.
Emergency crews from the North Chicago Police Department, Fire Department, and paramedics responded around 5:30 p.m. that Wednesday to reports of a shooting. Officers found Marder-Grant outside a residence, and he was rushed to Advocate Condell Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma facility, where he was declared dead shortly after arrival.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Thursday, April 24, 2025, confirming that Marder-Grant, a 31-year-old resident of Waukegan, died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
