Jose Castro dies in fatal Clearwater boat crash

Fatal Clearwater boat crash death of Jose Castro – Obituary

Jose Castro, 41, tragically lost his life following a collision between a boat and a ferry in Clearwater on Sunday night. Authorities from the Clearwater Police Department and other agencies gave updates Monday on the incident that occurred around 8:40 p.m.

According to Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy, the ferry was carrying 45 individuals, including two crew members, when it was struck by another boat. That vessel, which fled the scene after the crash, was later located 3.5 miles to the south with its occupants still on board.

The crash resulted in the death of Jose Castro and left 10 others injured, six of whom were transported to hospitals with serious injuries, including broken bones. Fortunately, no children were among the injured.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officially confirmed Castro’s identity. Chief Gandy noted that 911 dispatchers reported hearing “horrific screaming” during the emergency calls.

Officials said the operator of the boat involved in the collision was cooperative and tested negative for alcohol at the scene.

Chief Gandy also praised a ferry crew member whose quick actions are believed to have prevented further loss of life. The severity of the crash initially prompted a mass casualty response, as there were more victims than available first responders.

Clearwater Fire Rescue Chief Tony Tedesco explained that they deployed as many ambulances and rescue units as possible to handle the emergency.

At present, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation. Both the ferry and the other boat have been seized as part of the ongoing inquiry. No charges have been filed so far.
