Fatal Nipomo car crash death of Melchor David Delagarza – Obituary

Authorities from the California Highway Patrol have confirmed that Melchor David Delagarza, 63, and Darlene Leticia Scruggs, 49, both residents of Nipomo, were the two individuals who lost their lives in a deadly collision on Monday evening.

The tragic incident unfolded just before 6:30 p.m. when Delagarza, driving a white pickup south on Orchard Road near Cherry Blossom Place, attempted to overtake another vehicle. During this maneuver, he collided head-on with a white SUV operated by Scruggs. Both drivers sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the initial impact, Delagarza’s pickup continued forward and struck a red sedan. The individual behind the wheel of that car experienced only minor injuries.

The CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. They are urging anyone who saw what happened to contact Officer R. Chavez at (805) 594-8700.

Captain Mike Brown of the San Luis Obispo CHP office issued a reminder to the public, emphasizing the importance of avoiding distractions while driving and maintaining awareness of road conditions ahead.
