Mireya Pope dies in fatal Vista shooting

Mireya Pope dies in fatal Vista shooting

Fatal Vista shooting death of Mireya Pope – Obituary

The body of 60-year-old Mireya Pope was discovered in her Vista home after authorities responded to a welfare check request last Wednesday morning.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Pope was found with clear signs of trauma at her residence in the 700 block of North Citrus Avenue. Her exact cause of death has not yet been revealed.

After discovering her body, deputies learned that Pope’s son, 26-year-old Malcolm Morey Pope, was barricaded inside a bedroom in the same house. Despite repeated orders to surrender, the suspect refused to comply, which led to a SWAT team being called in to handle the situation.

The standoff continued for hours into the afternoon before the suspect was finally taken into custody in the early evening. Specifics about the arrest have not been shared.

Malcolm Pope was arrested and booked into the Vista County Jail on charges of murder, with no bail set as he awaits trial.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the alleged crime. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include murder and using a knife in his mother’s death. If convicted, he could face 26 years to life in prison.

Records show that in 2022, Mireya Pope had obtained an emergency protective order against her son after a violent incident where he allegedly dragged her from a vehicle and into the street.
