Salvador Granillo dies in fatal Yakima shooting

Fatal Yakima shooting death of Salvador Granillo – Obituary

Salvador “Junior” Granillo, an 18-year-old student from Garfield High School, was shot during a house party in Yakima on April 20 and later passed away at the hospital. The incident occurred after a confrontation escalated between Granillo and another attendee.

According to court records, Granillo had arrived at the party on South Keys Road with three others when a man wearing a Raiders jersey asked them for their “federal names.” The group ignored the question and stepped outside. When Granillo returned to the house to tell his girlfriend he was ready to leave, he encountered the same man blocking the doorway.

The situation escalated into an argument. Witnesses stated that the man spat in Granillo’s face, prompting Granillo to strike him. In response, the man pulled out a firearm from his waistband and opened fire.

Granillo’s friends rushed him to the hospital, but he did not survive. Police later identified the shooter as 21-year-old Israel Barriga Vargas, who was picked out of a six-person photo lineup by those who were with Granillo that night.

Barriga Vargas is now facing a charge of second-degree murder. Investigators have not confirmed whether the suspect and victim had any prior interactions before the shooting.
