Fatal Wiggenhall St Germans, Norfolk train death of James Smith – Obituary

James Smith, a 32-year-old marine engineer based at HM Naval Base Clyde in Scotland, was struck and killed by a train near Mill Lane in Wiggenhall St Germans, Norfolk, on April 24. The tragic event occurred around 12:50 p.m. on the railway line connecting King’s Lynn and Ely.

An inquest opened at Norfolk Coroner’s Court revealed that Smith, originally from Norwich, had legally changed his name from James Philip Bishop. His identity was confirmed through fingerprint analysis conducted by police experts.

A post-mortem examination by Dr. Ray Lonsdale concluded that the cause of death was extensive bodily trauma due to the train impact. The full inquest into his death is scheduled for October 10, and further statements are being collected from relevant authorities including the British Transport Police, Norfolk Police, and Smith’s general practitioner.

James was stationed at Faslane, the Royal Navy base known for housing the UK’s nuclear submarines. His sudden loss has prompted an outpouring of sympathy and reminders for those in distress to seek help through services like Samaritans or the NHS First Response.
