Antwain Johnson, a Walmart employee, was fatally shot on Wednesday night inside the Butler Plaza Walmart in Gainesville, Florida. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Drevon Parker, a former employee of the store, has been taken into custody.
Authorities say the incident unfolded around 10 p.m. in an employee-only section of the store following a heated argument between Parker and Johnson. Witnesses report that Parker pulled a gun and shot Johnson multiple times in front of his wife and children, who were at the store shopping with him.
After the shooting, Parker fled to his vehicle where he placed the firearm, then attempted to re-enter the store but was intercepted by law enforcement. He later turned himself in and has been charged with first-degree attempted murder.
Emergency responders rushed Johnson to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, doctors expect him to survive.
Walmart has since resumed normal operations at the location and issued a statement emphasizing the company’s commitment to the safety of both shoppers and employees while cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
