Fatal Lexington County car crash death of James Michael Carter – Obituary
James Michael Carter, 46, of Lexington, South Carolina, was killed Wednesday evening when a pickup truck crashed and burst into flames in Lexington County, authorities confirmed.
The crash occurred around 6:50 p.m. as a 2009 Chevrolet pickup was traveling eastbound on Founders Road near Founders Boulevard in the Pelion area, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The vehicle left the roadway, struck several trees, flipped over, and caught fire.
Carter, who was a passenger in the truck, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, said Coroner Margaret Fisher. His death has been classified as accidental.
The driver of the pickup was injured and transported to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia. While the injuries were described as non-life-threatening, no further updates on the driver’s condition have been provided.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the road, and it’s unclear whether either occupant was wearing a seat belt. The incident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
This crash adds to the growing toll of roadway fatalities in the state, with 251 people having died on South Carolina roads so far in 2025, including at least 13 in Lexington County alone.
