Fatal Grass Valley plane crash death of Robert Lund – Obituary

A tragic plane accident in Grass Valley claimed the life of Robert Lund of Newcastle, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

According to the Grass Valley Police Department, Lund departed from the Auburn airport in his 1997 Cessna Cardinal shortly after 8 a.m. While approaching the Nevada County airport, he issued a mayday call due to engine trouble. Communication with the aircraft was lost, and emergency services received reports of a crash around 8:20 a.m.

Responders located the wreckage on Whispering Pines Lane, but officials said there was no way to attempt lifesaving efforts, and Lund was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police noted the crash occurred in a commercial area that typically sees heavy foot and vehicle traffic during business hours. They believe Lund attempted to avoid hitting populated zones in his final moments.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
