Fatal Kansas City shooting death of Dustin J. Johnson – Obituary

Authorities have confirmed that 36-year-old Dustin J. Johnson was fatally shot by police officers following a violent incident at a Kansas City-area casino and a subsequent police chase on Thursday morning.

Officers from the Riverside Police Department and a Platte County sheriff’s deputy fired at Johnson after he allegedly pointed a firearm at them on Interstate 29, near I-435.

The incident began around 6:30 a.m. at the Argosy Casino and Hotel, where police responded to a report of domestic violence.

According to Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Alayna Gonzalez, the altercation involved a woman and two men, possibly including a current and former spouse.

Johnson is accused of shooting another man several times in the casino parking lot before fleeing the scene in a rented U-Haul truck. The injured man survived and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Following a five-minute pursuit, law enforcement deployed stop sticks on I-29, causing the U-Haul to stop. Police engaged in a 30-minute standoff with Johnson, who eventually exited the vehicle and allegedly raised a gun toward officers. At that point, two Riverside officers and one Platte County deputy opened fire. Johnson was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were harmed during the incident. While the Kansas City Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, Riverside authorities are handling inquiries related to the initial casino shooting.
