Fatal Shelburne, Vermont disappearance death of Ronald Van Mynen – Obituary

Ronald Van Mynen, an 87-year-old man from Shelburne, Vermont, was found deceased nearly a month after he vanished while out on a routine errand. His body and vehicle were discovered approximately 80 miles from his home in New York State.

Van Mynen was reported missing on April 1, after he left home without his cellphone and failed to return. Due to his medical condition and memory issues, authorities quickly classified him as an endangered missing person. A missing person flyer was distributed by the Shelburne Police Department two days later.

He was last seen near Grand Isle around 7 p.m. on the day he disappeared. He had reportedly asked someone for directions and was observed traveling south on Route 2 in his silver BMW X3. He had been planning a trip to South Burlington for errands, but never made it there.

Later that night, Van Mynen managed to contact his wife from a gas station in Alburgh, a town just south of the Canadian border. After leaving the station, he mistakenly headed north, and that would be the last time anyone heard from him.

On April 30, a contractor in Mountain View, New York, stumbled upon Van Mynen’s car, stuck on a seasonal road while preparing a campground for summer use. A short distance away, the contractor also found Van Mynen’s body. Authorities were able to confirm his identity using missing persons data provided by Shelburne police to the National Crime Information Center.

Though the investigation is still ongoing, police have stated there is no indication of foul play in Van Mynen’s death.
