Fatal Sherman County car crash death of Manuel Alarcon – Obituary

Manuel Alarcon, a 57-year-old man from Dodge City, Kansas, was one of eight people who died in a massive crash on March 14 along Interstate 70 near Edson in Sherman County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Alarcon was a passenger in a 2024 Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by Carlos S. Arzate of Shattuck, Oklahoma. The fatal collision occurred during a dust storm that drastically reduced visibility, leading to a 71-vehicle pileup around 3:22 p.m. The scene unfolded near the Sherman County Road 30 overpass, about 9 miles east of Goodland.

The patrol officially released Alarcon’s identity on April 14, a month after the crash. Whether he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision is unknown. The violent and fast-moving dust storm created chaotic driving conditions, contributing to multiple collisions within a 15-minute window.

In total, eight people were killed and 46 others were injured and transported to area hospitals. Authorities continue to investigate the crash and are working to complete multiple individual reports to accurately document the incidents.

Manuel Alarcon’s life was tragically cut short in one of Kansas’s worst highway disasters in recent memory, leaving behind a grieving community and highlighting the dangers of extreme weather conditions on major roads.
