Early Sunday morning, a tragic accident on the Bishop Ford Freeway in Calumet City, Illinois, claimed the life of Tom Mya Lyons, a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
The Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. on the Sibley Boulevard entrance ramp to I-94 and involved only one vehicle. Responding officers found one individual who was transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased. No other people were injured in the incident.
Homewood-Flossmoor High School later identified the student who died as Tom Mya Lyons and shared a heartfelt message with the school community, expressing sorrow and offering support to those affected.
“This is a deeply painful day for all of us at HF,” the message read. “We are mourning the passing of senior Tom Mya Lyons, who lost his life in an early morning vehicle accident. We send our sincerest sympathies to Tom Mya’s family and stand together in this moment of grief.”
The school announced that support services and a crisis response team would be available to students and staff on both Monday and Tuesday.
Authorities have not yet released further information regarding what led to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
