Fatal Bartlett Lake drowning death of Juan Ojeda-Valdez – Obituary

The body of Juan Ojeda-Valdez, a 21-year-old man who drowned in Bartlett Lake on Saturday, was recovered by authorities the following day, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to the scene around 4:30 p.m. on the far side of Bartlett Flats after receiving reports of a potential drowning.

Ojeda-Valdez had been swimming without a life vest when he began to struggle in the water. Despite efforts by two people nearby to assist him, they were unable to save him. By the time deputies reached the area, he had been submerged for approximately 15 minutes.

Investigators revealed that Ojeda-Valdez was attempting to cross a cove on foot but lost his footing about three-quarters of the way across. The lake’s 15-foot depth and the cold temperature of the water are considered contributing factors in the incident.

Another individual also attempted to cross the cove but managed to reach safety after struggling. Authorities say no foul play is suspected, and the case remains under investigation.
