Fatal Willamette River kayaking death of Marcelus Angelo Rodriguez – Obituary

The body of 20-year-old Marcelus Angelo Rodriguez, who went missing while kayaking in the Willamette River, was recovered on Sunday, May 4. Rodriguez had last been seen on April 12 when witnesses reported that he had gone over Willamette Falls and did not resurface. His kayak was found the following day near Elk Rock Island, approximately 7 miles downstream.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a body found near Meldrum Bar Park in Gladstone, about 2 miles downstream from the falls. Deputies confirmed the discovery, and a marine unit recovered the body. On Monday, the Clackamas County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the deceased as Rodriguez.

This marks the eighth body recovered from the Willamette River or Columbia River in the Portland area since the beginning of April. However, authorities have stated that there is no suspicion of foul play in any of the deaths. Increased water temperatures and higher water activity are thought to have contributed to the discoveries of the bodies.
