Fatal Marathon shooting death of Duane Clayton Day – Obituary.
Duane Clayton Day, a 53-year-old resident of Marathon, Florida, has been identified as the man who opened fire on Monroe County deputies before apparently taking his own life during a rooftop standoff. The confrontation occurred around 10 p.m. on May 8 at an apartment building on Sombrero Boulevard.
Deputies arrived in response to reports of a man throwing objects from the roof. Upon arrival, they heard gunfire and quickly took cover as the suspect began shooting at their patrol vehicles. Fortunately, no officers or civilians were harmed.
Sheriff Rick Ramsay confirmed that Day appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He also noted that Day had recently gone through a divorce and job loss. Law enforcement established a perimeter, and support was called in from multiple agencies, including SWAT, the Florida Highway Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and others.
Two helicopters from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office assisted in locating Day, who was found unresponsive on the roof. When SWAT members approached, they confirmed he was deceased. Authorities recovered an AR-15 rifle and a Glock handgun near his body. Day was confirmed to be a resident of the apartment complex where the incident unfolded.
