Fatal Frostproof car crash death of Crystal Loyd – Obituary
A deadly crash involving a wrong-way driver on U.S. 27 near Frostproof claimed the life of 41-year-old Crystal Loyd of Sebring and a second motorist late Wednesday night.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around 10 p.m. on May 8 in the southbound lanes of U.S. 27 near Bay Street in the Sun Ray community. A 2021 black Toyota Corolla driven by Loyd was traveling north in the southbound lane when it collided head-on with a red Nissan Altima that was heading south.
The impact caused the Toyota to burst into flames. Loyd, who was alone in the car, died at the scene. The Nissan, driven by a 32-year-old man from Kissimmee, spun and stopped in the outside lane, facing west. He was ejected and also pronounced dead at the scene.
A 31-year-old Kissimmee woman, who was a passenger in the Nissan and lived at the same address as the driver, was critically injured. Emergency crews had to extricate her before airlifting her to a hospital. As of the latest update, she remains in critical but stable condition.
Shortly before the collision, a 911 call had reported a vehicle driving northbound in the southbound lanes at a high speed. U.S. 27 is a four-lane divided highway with a grassy median separating the directions.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
