A deadly altercation in Angelina County, Texas has resulted in the shooting death of 48-year-old Jeffery George Arriola following a dispute over speeding, with 26-year-old Philip Hunter Gersbach now facing a murder charge.
According to authorities, the confrontation occurred Wednesday night as Gersbach was driving home. He told investigators that a woman stood in the road, signaling him to stop, accusing him of speeding past her residence multiple times. Shortly afterward, Arriola, identified as the woman’s husband, reportedly approached and angrily confronted Gersbach.
Gersbach claimed that Arriola threatened to shoot him and made a motion that appeared to involve pointing an object at his vehicle’s headrest. Gersbach responded by opening fire on Arriola. He later called emergency dispatchers at 11:15 p.m. to report the shooting and stated he was attempting CPR.
When deputies arrived at the scene in the Allentown area, they found Arriola deceased and detained Gersbach for questioning. The woman involved told authorities that Gersbach had used profane language toward her, prompting Arriola to step in and threaten him. She reported that Gersbach shot Arriola multiple times from inside his truck before stepping out and firing additional rounds.
After consulting with the district attorney, the sheriff’s office charged Gersbach with murder. He was booked into Angelina County Jail but was released after posting a $15,000 bond.
