Fatal Lewis Smith Lake boat crash death of Joey M. Broom – Obituary

Joey M. Broom, 58, of Altoona, Alabama, tragically lost his life in a deadly boating collision on Lewis Smith Lake during the Major League Fishing (MLF) Tackle Warehouse Invitational. The crash occurred early Wednesday morning and led tournament officials to cancel the final day of the competition.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. when a Nitro bass boat, driven by tournament angler Flint Davis of Leesburg, Georgia, collided with a center console boat carrying three men. Broom was one of the passengers in that vessel, along with John K. Clark, 44, of Cullman, Alabama, and Jeffrey C. Little, 62, of Brandon, Mississippi. All three died due to the severity of the crash. Two were thrown from the boat and drowned, while the third passed away from injuries sustained during the collision.

In response to the tragedy, MLF executive vice president Kathy Fennel offered heartfelt condolences, stating the organization is deeply saddened by the loss.

The fishing tournament, which had begun on Sunday and offered a top prize of up to $115,000, was immediately suspended following the incident.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division is actively investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet provided additional information.

Joey M. Broom is remembered as a beloved member of the Altoona community with a passion for the outdoors. His sudden and heartbreaking death has left family and friends mourning a man known for his warmth, generosity, and enduring love of fishing.
