Fatal Gary shooting death of Joseph Navarro – Obituary

Joseph Navarro, 50, from the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago, was shot and killed Thursday after exchanging gunfire with police in Gary, Indiana. The fatal incident followed a vehicle pursuit that began in Chicago’s Far Southeast Side.

 

Chicago police responded to a report of an armed individual around 5:50 p.m. in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue. Officers located Navarro, who was reportedly wanted for aggravated battery, as he entered a vehicle and attempted to flee.

 

The chase ended in Gary, just over the Indiana state line, in the 100 block of Gostlin Avenue. After crashing, Navarro allegedly opened fire on pursuing officers, prompting them to shoot back. He was struck multiple times and transported to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, where he died at 6:44 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner.

 

An autopsy confirmed that Navarro died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially classified as a homicide. A weapon was recovered at the scene, and two officers involved were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

 

As per department policy, the officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is handling the investigation.
