Fatal Newberry Springs crash deaths of Sailor Martinez, Trent Martinez, and Cole Martinez – Obituary
Three siblings from Barstow—Sailor Martinez, 10, Trent Martinez, 15, and Cole Martinez, 16—were tragically killed in a single-vehicle accident on May 4, along with their father, 35-year-old Bryce Martinez of Yermo. The crash occurred on the westbound side of the 40 Freeway, just east of Newberry Springs, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities reported that the family was traveling in a 2012 Dodge Ram, driven by the father, when the truck veered off the highway, rolling several times after hitting the dirt shoulder. All four occupants died at the scene from injuries sustained in the wreck. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
In response to this devastating loss, the local community rallied to support the children’s mother, Tamara Ortiz. A GoFundMe page created to help her cope with the sudden loss had raised over $15,000 by Mother’s Day. Michael Garcia, Ortiz’s current partner and father to her two younger children, Peyton and Lynsey, shared that the family is doing their best to guide the children through the grief.
In addition to the fundraiser, contributions can be made through Dignity Memorial in Barstow. The California Highway Patrol is urging anyone with information about the crash to contact Officer S. Herrera at the Barstow Area Office.
