Fatal Milan suicide death of Emanuele De Maria – Obituary
Emanuele De Maria, a 35-year-old convicted murderer, died after leaping from the Duomo Cathedral in Milan on Sunday, May 11, while evading law enforcement.
Authorities had been searching for De Maria following the stabbing of a hotel coworker. During the early afternoon, he reportedly jumped from a significant height at the famed cathedral, tragically grazing a child with a toy during his fall. He was identified at the scene by his tattoos.
Eyewitnesses described a loud impact and chaos as people fled the square. Medics who were nearby tried to help, but De Maria was pronounced dead at the scene.
De Maria had been employed at the Berna hotel through a work-release program from Bollate prison, where he was serving a 15-year sentence for the 2016 murder of a 23-year-old woman in Castel Volturno. He had previously fled to the Netherlands and was arrested in Germany in 2018.
He became a fugitive again on Friday after allegedly stabbing 50-year-old Hani Fouad Abdelghaffar, who remains hospitalized but is showing signs of recovery. Police are also investigating the death of a 50-year-old Sri Lankan woman, another colleague of De Maria’s, who was reported missing and later found dead.
Authorities continue to examine De Maria’s motives and the sequence of events leading to the fatal plunge.
