Fatal Horry County animal enclosure death of Eric Slate – Obituary
Eric Slate, 52, was found dead on Friday, May 9, 2025, inside an animal enclosure housing kangaroos and wallabies near Loris, South Carolina. Authorities reported that Slate suffered multiple blunt force injuries believed to be caused during an apparent animal attack.
According to the Horry County Police Department, the incident occurred in a private area off Highway 746. The victim was identified as a relative of the enclosure’s owner, Robert Slate. Law enforcement stated the event involved a “non-domesticated animal” and emphasized that all animals at the location remain secured, posing no risk to the public.
The Horry County Coroner’s Office confirmed Slate died from the injuries sustained within the enclosure. Councilman Dennis DiSabato later alleged a kangaroo was directly involved in the deadly encounter. An autopsy has been ordered to formally determine the exact cause of death.
Robert Slate, who owns 5 Star Farm where the incident happened, publicly acknowledged the tragedy in a social media post, asking for privacy and support for the family.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
