Fatal Salt Lake City hit-and-run crash death of Paul Sagers III – Obituary
Paul Sagers III was killed in a tragic hit-and-run incident that took place in downtown Salt Lake City during the early hours of May 2. The 61-year-old suspect, Steven Ray Weathers, has since been arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including automobile homicide.
Authorities responded to the scene near 400 South 200 East around 1:15 a.m. and found Sagers’ body approximately 50 feet from a crosswalk. Surveillance footage revealed that a dark Jeep without headlights struck the victim and fled.
Roughly 45 minutes later, firefighters discovered the suspected vehicle in a Trader Joe’s parking lot. Police arrived shortly after and detained Weathers, who reportedly showed clear signs of intoxication. Officers said he reeked of alcohol, struggled to stay upright, and was slurring his words.
Inside the Jeep, investigators found an open can of Bud Light, a partial case of the same beer, and an unopened 12-pack of Corona. The vehicle also had visible damage matching the point of impact with Sagers. A blood test later revealed Weathers had a blood alcohol level of 0.188, which is over three times Utah’s legal limit.
In addition to the homicide charge, Weathers faces accusations of driving on a denied license, possessing an open container in a vehicle, and failing to remain at the scene of a deadly crash. He is being held in Salt Lake County Jail and is scheduled for a court appearance on May 14.
