Qidere Johnson dies in fatal Juniata Park shooting

Fatal Juniata Park shooting death of Qidere Johnson – Obituary

Authorities have identified the man killed in a weekend shooting in Philadelphia’s Juniata Park as 30-year-old Qidere Johnson, known in the music world as rapper LGP QUA. The North Philadelphia native was shot near the intersection of M and East Luzerne streets on Sunday, May 11, around 4:40 p.m.

Police said Johnson was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle shortly after the shooting. He was pronounced dead about 20 minutes after police arrived on the scene.

Ameer Barber, a youth advocate in the community, reflected on Johnson’s influence, calling him “one of a kind.” Barber emphasized how Johnson used his voice to promote positive messages through music, contrasting the often violent themes prevalent in the genre.

Investigators have yet to make an arrest or name any suspects. Authorities believe the incident may have stemmed from a robbery.

In a 2019 interview with CBS News Philadelphia, Johnson discussed his music career and urged young people to embrace their individuality, saying, “Be you. Be different. Stand out. Don’t be like a crowd.”

Johnson overcame a difficult past, including time in prison during his early twenties, to gain national attention. He collaborated with Will.i.am and earned recognition from the Philadelphia City Council for giving back to the community, including donating nearly 1,000 pairs of shoes to students with the support of Puma and Foot Locker.

Although Barber and Johnson never worked together directly, they bonded over a shared mission to uplift youth. Barber said he plans to carry on Johnson’s legacy by teaching young people the deeper meanings behind his lyrics, emphasizing themes of hope and change in the city.

Rapper Meek Mill also acknowledged Johnson’s passing in an Instagram story, offering prayers for his loved ones.

A $20,000 reward is available for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Those with tips are encouraged to contact police at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
